It is no secret that young people, in particular, seem to develop a strong devotion to the Traditional Form of the Mass. Bishop Scheieder commented in an interview in 2023 that: “You can go all over the world and on Sundays, where there is a traditional Latin Mass the churches are packed with young families and with children. It gives us hope in the future.”
The Latin Mass Society is sensitive to the affection young people show the Old Rite. That is why we are pleased to support various programmes and initiatives that directly engage or benefit young people.
These include:
- Chartres Bursaries for those up to 35. For several years the Latin Mass Society has provided five bursaries of £100 each to UK based pilgrims aged 18-35 who take part on this pilgrimage. This traditional pilgrimage has grown year on year with 16,000 pilgrims undertaking the 70-mile walk in 2023.
- Support for Juventutem. Juventutem London meets monthly, with Confessions, Mass and a social for ages 18-35 that follows. Juventutem also arranges an annual Summer Weekend at Ampleforth for young people, which the Latin Mass Society supports too.
- Annual Walsingham Pilgrimage. The Annual Walsingham Pilgrimage attracts a large number of young people. Many of these go on to form lasting friendships (and, in at least one instance, even marriage!).
- Student membership discount. The Latin Mass Society values its members, young and old. As an extra encouragement to young people with an affection for the Old Rite, we are pleased to be able to offer membership at a reduced price from £17.50 per year.
- We make grants to organisations such as the St Cartherine's Trust, which organises a residential summer school for young poeple each year.
